Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT)

Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is a branch of science that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases using clinical laboratory tests. It is complimentary to medical science. This involves analysis of the body fluids including tissues and blood. It also covers micro-organism screening, chemical analyses and cell count.

Medical Laboratory Technologists perform most of their tasks such as preparation of slides of human tissues or other specimens, using laboratory equipments. They also carry out tasks such as blood tests and blood typing. These professionals play a very important role in collecting information, sampling, testing, reporting and documenting medical investigations in respect of Blood banking, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Cytopathology, Phlebotomy, Urine Analysis, Coagulation, Parasitology, Blood Sample Matching, Drug Efficacy Tests, Serology, clinical pathology, histopathology, Molecular testing, IVF Lab, lab quality assurance, etc.

Career Prospects:

The career prospect in DMLT depends on the academic performance and the technical skills of the technologist. Initially one joins any laboratory as a certified medical laboratory technologist. With the manifold increase in number of hospitals, nursing homes, blood banks, pathology laboratories etc. the demand of the laboratory technologists is always on the up-swing. With profound knowledge and adequate experience, Medical Laboratory Technologists can reach to Senior Supervisory or Managerial positions in laboratories and hospitals. Additional opportunities are available in molecular diagnostics, molecular bio-technology institutions, Vitro fertilisation laboratories and research labs.

Why Study DMLT Course?

DMLT Course is made up of four semesters that cover core topics, electives, projects, and practical workshops. Core topics include human anatomy, MLT fundamentals, human psychology, and biochemistry basics. The optional classes include clinical hematology, clinical microbiology, technical microbiology, and clinical biochemistry.  A diploma in Medical Lab Technology is beneficial for students who want to learn, inspect, test, and identify several human diseases. Eligibility, Academic Qualification Criteria and admission procedure

  1. Applicant must be a citizen of India and minimum 17 years of Age.There is no upper age limit.
  1. Candidate must have Passed the Qualifying Examination i.e. the ’10+2′ examination with Physics, Chemistry & Biology with individual pass marks (both in theory and practical) in regular class mode from the Board /Council recognized by the Central Government or State Government.
  2. The interested candidates must be appeared in OMR based Common Entrance Examination conducted by State Medical Faculty of West Bengal. The details will be available in the Faculty website: https://www.smfwb.formflix.org
  3. The admission of candidates in different paramedical courses are made through Faculty level on-line and institution level off-line counseling process among the successful candidates in the SMFWBEE
